What is a supply chain?
A supply chain is the connected network of organizations, people, activities, information, and resources involved in moving a product or service from raw material to the end customer. It spans suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and the logistics providers that link them.
Supply chain management (SCM) is the discipline of planning and coordinating all of that so the right product arrives at the right place, at the right time, in the right condition, and at the right cost.
The three flows
Every supply chain coordinates three simultaneous flows. Material flow moves goods downstream from suppliers to customers. Information flow moves in both directions — orders and forecasts upstream, status and shipping data downstream. Financial flow moves payments upstream as value is delivered.
When these flows are synchronized, inventory shrinks, service improves, and cost falls. When they drift apart, you get stockouts, excess inventory, and the bullwhip effect.
Why integration matters
The classic mistake is to optimize one link — say, buying in huge batches to cut unit price — while ignoring the ripple costs of holding that inventory everywhere else. Integrated SCM looks at total system cost and service, not local wins.
The core trade-off
Nearly every SCM decision balances cost against responsiveness. A lean, low-inventory chain is efficient but fragile; a responsive, buffered chain absorbs shocks but costs more. Strategy is about choosing the right point on that spectrum for your product and market.
